Community Collaboration for Sustainable Ecologies

Mining Impact Specialists Ltd. (MISL) works with corporations, local and Indigenous communities, governments and other agencies (public and private), to facilitate deep listening, integrated learning, and values-aligned project planning from project idea to post mining transition planning.

Through our facilitated processes, project partners deepen understanding of each other’s worldview, current understanding, perspectives, and constrains. Community benefit during and well beyond a project’s life is defined as well as what behaviors build and undermine trust for the duration of partnership. Additionally, the participation and contributions of partners with the expertise, resources and resolve critical to building the capacity, capabilities and infrastructure needed to enable community and ecosystem thriving through and beyond all project phases will also be coordinated to ensure that all parties contribute from their core and complementary bases of expertise.

About Mining Impact Specialists Ltd.

MISL is on a mission to re-imagine mine planning, from concept through post closure land transition planning, in ways that enable sustained thriving of local communities and the ecosystems on which their life ways depend beyond a mine’s life.

We facilitate effective engagement and mine closure and post closure planning and execution by:

  • Ensuring that all partners are identified and integrated into the process at the earliest opportunity
  • Identifying and addressing critical gaps in knowledge, understanding and expertise
  • Assessing and developing mitigation strategies for identified hazards and operating risks from the perspective of both the company and the community
  • Developing and promoting mechanisms enabling desired transparency of critical operations metrics that provide both corporate and community boards with desired critical insight
  • Working collaboratively with corporations, local and Indigenous communities, and other identified partners to design better mines and post mining realities that are not exclusively dependent on mining companies.

Our Purpose

Innovative natural resource management through community collaboration

With over 20 years of experience in mining and mine closure, our expertise facilitates the exploration of the fullest range of science-based findings alongside Traditional / local knowledge and practices as we work with motivated project partners toward outcomes that promote future thriving on all fronts.

Experience has taught us that working together to discover a shared purpose is the only way to successfully address collaborative challenges. People know what they need and what they desire their present and future to look like. Mining companies must also evolve to recognize the self-awareness, dignity, and wisdom held by the people in the communities in which they operate. It is our honour and privilege to facilitate the building of crucial bridges that allow values-aligned project strategy to be developed and desired outcomes achieved.

Land Management Strategy with Purpose

We work with local and Indigenous communities to articulate values, outline priorities, and develop strategic and corporate collaboration frameworks that write an ongoing story of a reciprocal relationship with the Land, while all parties involved derive near and long-term economic benefits.

Mine Liability Assessment & Closure Planning

We assess the financial liability of planned, existing or closed mines, and prepare closure cost estimates guided by global mining standards. We engage local and Indigenous communities and corporations to collaboratively develop closure plans guided by values-driven land transition planning.

Corporate-Community
Relationship Building

We work to develop common understanding between motivated corporations and communities to enable enduring partnerships anchored in trust and accountability. These partnerships – which must necessarily involve parties besides mining companies and community representatives – enable mutual economic and community-defined benefit, sustainable ecologies, and thriving local and Indigenous communities to be realized.
