Mining Impact Specialists Ltd. (MISL) works with corporations, local and Indigenous communities, governments and other agencies (public and private), to facilitate deep listening, integrated learning, and values-aligned project planning from project idea to post mining transition planning.
Through our facilitated processes, project partners deepen understanding of each other’s worldview, current understanding, perspectives, and constrains. Community benefit during and well beyond a project’s life is defined as well as what behaviors build and undermine trust for the duration of partnership. Additionally, the participation and contributions of partners with the expertise, resources and resolve critical to building the capacity, capabilities and infrastructure needed to enable community and ecosystem thriving through and beyond all project phases will also be coordinated to ensure that all parties contribute from their core and complementary bases of expertise.
MISL is on a mission to re-imagine mine planning, from concept through post closure land transition planning, in ways that enable sustained thriving of local communities and the ecosystems on which their life ways depend beyond a mine’s life.
We facilitate effective engagement and mine closure and post closure planning and execution by:
Our Mission:
To enable mining practices that are not only best in the world but best for the world by facilitating consideration of the widest range of project possibilities so that diverse project partners can plan better projects and land transition strategies as project ideas start to coalesce.
We advocate for the development of new mining policy and permitting practices that embed traditional and community knowledge alongside western science-based progress indicators to enable critical cultural and ecological functions to be understood, preserved, and sustained.
We work to ensure all voices at the table are heard and understood.
Our Vision:
To drive change in the dynamics between corporations and local communities (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) creating ongoing collaboration where enduring knowledge and innovation come together to build better outcomes at all project stages.
We are committed to collaboration with integrity and know from experience that this is possible when all partners’ values and trust-affirming behaviors form the base upon which all exploration and project planning respectfully proceeds.
True partnership comes when we all understand that the widest range of possibilities exists where we have built strong relationships.
We want to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of this world, as Earth actively contributes to our health, happiness and livelihood. We are passionately committed to understanding that scope through our core values.
Wisdom: We draw from all sources of wisdom and are ready to learn, to honour and uplift cultures and knowledge systems that understand land as living and worthy of reciprocal relationship and care.
Listening: We have profound respect for those who express community values, especially concerning Land that sustains community lifeways. Deep listening allows us to help project partners identify the broadest range of possible outcomes and ever-evolving project strategies to support and sustain life and communities to thrive far beyond project closure.
Legacy: We are working to create something lasting. Believing in the importance of acting meaningfully today, we work tirelessly to build communication and relationship bridges between all parties to pursue and achieve something beyond what we can do as individuals.
With over 20 years of experience in mining and mine closure, our expertise facilitates the exploration of the fullest range of science-based findings alongside Traditional / local knowledge and practices as we work with motivated project partners toward outcomes that promote future thriving on all fronts.
Experience has taught us that working together to discover a shared purpose is the only way to successfully address collaborative challenges. People know what they need and what they desire their present and future to look like. Mining companies must also evolve to recognize the self-awareness, dignity, and wisdom held by the people in the communities in which they operate. It is our honour and privilege to facilitate the building of crucial bridges that allow values-aligned project strategy to be developed and desired outcomes achieved.
We work with local and Indigenous communities to articulate values, outline priorities, and develop strategic and corporate collaboration frameworks that write an ongoing story of a reciprocal relationship with the Land, while all parties involved derive near and long-term economic benefits.
We assess the financial liability of planned, existing or closed mines, and prepare closure cost estimates guided by global mining standards. We engage local and Indigenous communities and corporations to collaboratively develop closure plans guided by values-driven land transition planning.
We work to develop common understanding between motivated corporations and communities to enable enduring partnerships anchored in trust and accountability. These partnerships – which must necessarily involve parties besides mining companies and community representatives – enable mutual economic and community-defined benefit, sustainable ecologies, and thriving local and Indigenous communities to be realized.
